Friday Face-Off: 13/05/16

This weekly meme was created by Books by Proxy. Each weeks there’s a different theme and you compare two different covers of the same book relating to that theme. For more information, click here.

This week’s theme is Which Witch is Which? A cover which features a witch and/or witchcraft.

For this, I’m choosing…

The Witches by Roald Dahl. I grew up with these books so I thought why not?

<< This is one of the first ever covers of The Witches by Roald Dahl, illustrated by Quentin Blake.

The book was first published in 1983.

This is the most recent cover of The Witches >>

I really like the fact that the original illustrations by Quentin Blake have been kept for the newest edition.

Comparing these two, the winner is:

The Original Version.

I love the fact that the character in the front almost pops out of the book. The most recent cover looks very bare.

Which do you prefer?

Great choice! I almost chose it myself! The original image is the first thing I ALWAYS think of when I think of The Witches – I love it! It really captures the imagination and inspired a certain amount of terror in me as a child – bald witches and the Grand High Witch! Terrifying! I also love that Quentin Blake’s illustrations continue to find their way onto the newest covers 😀
